These women passing Popplewell's grocery shop on Seymour Street are dressed for work in a mill: in 1910 the woollen industry was heavily dependent on female and child labour. In 'Eastbrook Centenary Souvenir', in a chapter about the Brotherhood: "Another striking feature of the Mission's activities was the Temperance Crusade which was soon on foot, worthily following up the work of Reverend J Wilson ... such activity naturally arouses the hostility and fears of those engaged in the liquor trade. That it was successful is shown in the following testimony:- "at the Men's Society Class....it was announced that a local publican had appealed to the Guardians for a reduction in his assessment on the plea that 'the Eastbrook Brotherhood had robbed him of his customers' (Bradford Methodist, August 1905 p174)". Eastbrook Sunday school had a Temperance Society, members would pledge not to drink.
