Portrait of Rev Cannon John Robertson, Vicar of Bradford, by John Sowden, 1 February 1905.
from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Was born at Weymouth, Dorset in 1853, eldest son of James Robertson of Weymouth, and was educated at Weymouth College School (now Weymouth College). He graduated at Queen’s College, Oxford, where he took his BA degree in 1875, obtaining his MA degree three years later. In 1875 he was ordained deacon, and a year later priest.
After holding curacies for three years in London he became a London diocesan home missionary, and subsequently was vicar of Holy Trinity, Stroud Green. In 1885 he accepted the living of Saint Mary's Kilburn, which he held for a period of over 10 years, until his removal to Bradford in 1896.
In Bradford Canon Robertson left behind him a record of solid and useful work by which he will be long remembered.
His chief undertaking was probably that connected with the restoration of the Parish Church. On coming to Bradford he found a movement already on foot for the restoration of the church as a memorial to his predecessor, the late Archdeacon Bardsley. He was made DD in 1897 and honorary Canon of Ripon Cathedral in 1904. In the early years of this vicareate in Bradford he lost his first wife, afterwards marrying Miss Ellen Armitage, daughter of the late Mr J R Armitage of Bradford. Canon Robertson retired in 1906 on account of ill-health and in 1908 accepted from the authorities of Queens College, Oxford his alma mater the living of Monk, Sherborne-with-Pamber. He died in December 1913."
