From the 1700s onwards the British Merchant Navy recruited large numbers of men from those areas of the Asian sub-continent that had a strong tradition of seafaring. Choudhry Qasim Ali (centre) tells his story of joining the British Merchant Navy and first sailing to London in 1921. He jumped ship in 1942. After setting up a fish and chip shop in Manchester he moved to Newcastle where his family now own a grocery shop, a take-away and a taxi business. 1997.
