from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Was born at Begbie, Kirkcudbright, November 24, 1807 and was the youngest son of a large family. His father died when he was six months old. He came to Bradford in 1826 to join his brother Matthew in his business and afterwards succeeded to it, and throughout the whole of his career he was one of the prominent figures in the Bradford trade. He was married to a Dumfries lady in 1834 and had issue three sons and two daughters. In 1841 Mr McKean joined Mr Samuel Tetley, the firm being McKean, Tetley and Co, stuff merchants. In 1880 Mr McKean retired from the firm. He died at Harrogate in 1898, aged 91 years."
