Watercolour portrait of Dr RH Meade JP
from John Sowden's notebooks
"Was the son of Reverend Richard Meade of Princes Riston (Risborough?), Buckinghamshire. He was born in 1814. He received his medical education at Saint Bartholomews Hospital, London, his fellow student being Sir James Paget with whom a warm friendship sprang up and lasted through life.
In 1836 Dr Meade became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and eight years later he was appointed a fellow of the College of Examination. Previously to coming to Bradford he was in practice in London and held the position of Lecturer to the students at Middlesex Hospital.
He came to Bradford in 1840 to take up the practice gained by Dr Sharp. For 16 years he was house surgeon to the Bradford Infirmary and for over 30 years he was surgeon to the Low Moor and Bowling Iron Works Companies. He was one of the first members of the Bradford Medical Society and president on several occasions. Dr Meade studied the social problems of the city and was magistrate for 20 years. He held a high position in the scientific world chiefly owing to his extensive and varied entomological researches.
He died in 1899 leaving three sons and three daughters."
