Biographical note in Sowden's notebook:

Mr Emsley was born in Bradford in 1863. Was educated at Ryan Street Board School and at Heversham Street Higher Grade School.

Commenced to work about 1876 and worked alternately, with periods at school, until I was fifteen years old, when I worked continuously at the mill.
In 1887 I joined my brothers in the firm of J. Emsley & Co, which continued until his death in 1912.

Since that time my son has been associated with me in the business of J. Emsley & Co. In 1910 I was associated with my brother until his death in 1912 with the firm of John Speight Son & Co, since then I have carried on the business alone. In 1912 I acquired the business of Messrs Peel Bros. & Co of Bradford and in 1917 I took over the business of Messrs John H. Smith & Co Ltd.

Mr Emsley was Vice Chairman of the Eastern division of Bradford from 1900 to 1906, and from that date to the present has been Chairman. He was made a Justice of the Peace in 1906. Mr Emsley married Miss Sutcliffe and has issue one son and two daughters.
