Watercolour portrait of Gainsford Bruce QC MP by John Sowden. Born at Newcastle 24 May 1834, educated at Glasgow University, Middle Temple. Called to the bar 1859, appointed Recorder of Bradford, Chancellor of Durham University. 1886.

from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Was the Recorder for Bradford for fifteen years, being appointed in 1877, and during the time his consideration for the persons(?), his courtesy to the bar and his thoughtfulness for the jurymen and above all the courtesy which he always fully extended to those who assisted him in the administration of justice will always be remembered by the members of the profession.

He retired in 1902 on his elevation to the judicial bench."
