Watercolour portrait of Rev John Eddows.
from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Mr Eddows with but a slight interval was associated with the church of Saint Judes for a period of 40 years. The church when it was opened was in the midst of green fields. The first vicar was the Reverend James Cooper, who exchanged livings with Mr Eddows, who was then vicar of Garton-upon-the-Wolds. Mr Eddowes came in 1857. In 1865 appropriated seats (pew letting or pew renting) was abolished and made free.
In 1871 the foundation of the future church of Saint Mary Magdalene was laid by the opening of the mission in Golden Square. This culminated in the opening of the new church in 1878 and the appointment of the Reverend GE Redhead as vicar. Other features introduced by Mr Eddows were the Sisterhood in Hanover Square, a middle-class school for girls, a ragged school, a children's hospital for the poor of White Abbey, a Mission Room in Thorncliffe Road and a section of Saint Adrian’s Mission Church. In 1884 his health broke down in 1885 he accepted the living of Eastgate, Durham, the Reverend E Brice being appointed vicar of Saint Judes.
On the death of Mr Brice in 1893, Mr Eddows returned to the vicarage of Saint Judes and shortly afterwards was made honorary Canon of Ripon Cathedral.
In 1902 Mr Eddows resigned owing to advancing years and was the recipient of a handsome testimonial in the shape of titles to an annuity and a cheque representing altogether the sum of £525. He was the son of a Shropshire newspaper proprietor and was educated at Shrewsbury School and afterwards proceeded to Magdalene College, Cambridge where he graduated BA in 1850 and three years later took his MA degree. He was ordained a priest at Lichfield in 1853. He died in 1905 at the age 80 years."
