Watercolour portrait of Arthur Briggs JP

from John Sowden's notebooks:

"He was the only child of the Mr Nathanial Briggs, who in his lifetime was the head of the firm of Messrs Milligan, Forbes & Co, stuff merchants, a business established by the late Mr Robert Milligan, the first mayor of Bradford after its incorporation in 1847, and for the same period one of its members for the Borough. Mr Arthur Briggs became a partner during the lifetime of his father, whose death occurred in 1880. Mr Arthur Briggs was born at Moorcroft House, Rawdon on September 18, 1836 and was in his 56th year of his age when he died in 1892. He was educated at Huddersfield and at University College, London and spent some years in travelling before he entered his father's firm.
He married a daughter of Dr Campbell of Cawnpore(?). He had one son and two daughters. He sat for three years as a representative of the South Ward of the Town Council from 1867 to 1870. He was a member of the Bradford School Board and was at one time chairman. In politics he was a thorough Liberal. He was a governor of both the Boys and Girls Grammar Schools. He was a prominent Freemason, and was on the Infirmary Board of Management and was also connected with many other charitable institutions in the town."
