Portrait of Fawthrop A Fyrth, Bone Setter and Veterinary Surgeon.
Sowden's notes in notebooks -
'Mr Fyrth was the son of Dr. Fawthrop Fyrth who had a wide reputation as the `Thornton doctor'. Having served an apprenticeship to the bone and cow doctoring business with his father young Fawthrop set up on his own account at Thorp Arch as a veterinary surgeon, but when his father died in 1842, he took up the business of bonesetter and veterinary surgeon at the `Pack Horse Surgery'. The furnishings and surgical appliances of the establishment were in keeping with the place. He stayed on the Pack Horse premises under 13 landlords, but never paid any rent! He was very eccentric but good hearted. His terms were `ready money', but his fees were light. He had a large clientele & was sought from far and near. He died in 1896.
He was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, England and a licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries. He was one of the founders of the West Riding Medical Charitable Society and was the first vice president for a long period. He was a staunch Churchman and a Conservative but took no active part in politics. He was an old Freemason.'
