Watercolour portrait of the Rev Archibald Duff Professor at the Yorkshire United Independent College Bradford

from John Sowden's notes:

"Was born in Fraserburgh in 1845 and was the son of the Reverend Archibald Duff DB.
When he was 11 his father emigrated to Canada, a second time. In Canada his father settled in Cowansville, where he served a parish for 20 miles long. In 1860 Dr Duff enrolled at McGill University, Montréal and in 1864 graduated BA with first rank honours in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. He then took Certificates at the Normal (?) School; authorising him to be a public teacher under Government in any school in the province of Québec and taught in those schools, chiefly High Schools, for five years. He next studied theology and spent three years at Andover Theological Seminary in Massachusetts and three years in Germany, and was advised to continue as a teacher. He spent 2 years in Halle University and one year at Gottingen.
He was appointed to a Theological Lectureship in Montréal in 1875, to a Hebrew Lectureship in the University, and also a mathematical one there in 1876, holding these until 1878. He was appointed professor of Hebrew and Old Testament Theology in the Airedale, now United College, Bradford where he has taught for 38 years. He took his MA in McGill University in 1867 and his doctorate in law (LLD) by examination in 1882. In 1901 was made Doctor of Divinity by Queens University, Kingston, Canada for works published. He has written many works on theology which have been published in London and Bradford. He served on the Bradford City Council for two years, 1905-1907. He was chairman of the Yorkshire Congregational Union for 1895, presiding at the annual meeting in Sheffield.
He has spent his Sunday generally in visiting the aided Congregational churches and others all over the county and is therefore well versed in their management. He has been twice married, first to Elizabeth Craigmile of Aberdeen: and again in 1897 to Mary Hannah Cockshott of Oakworth. He has two children a son and a daughter."
