Portrait of Dr Samuel Brown Surgeon. Son of a Scottish farmer near Dumfries. Came to Bradford in 1845. He never married and retired to Dumfries and died in 1894 aged 76.

Note in Sowden's notebook:
Dr Samuel Brown was the son of a Scotch farmer near Dumfries. When he was 16 years of age he was sent to Edinburgh University where he took his M. D. degree and became licentiate of he Royal College of Surgeons. He came to Bradford in 1845 and became a partner with Mr Gordon, a surgeon. On the death of Mr Gordon Dr. Brown continued to practice until 1871, being joined by Dr Goyder as assistant in 1860, and later as a partner. Dr. brown was medicial officer to the Bradford Guardians. Whilst they were together Dr. Brown & Dr. Goyder by hard work acquired, possibly the largest practice in Bradford. In 1871 the partnership was dissolved. Though he never took any active public part in politics. Dr Brown was keenly interested in political matters. At first when he came to Bradford he was a Conservative, but afterwards became a strong Radical. he worked hard to established a supply of trained nurses in the town. Dr Brown never married. He retired to Dunfries and died in 1894 in his 76th year.
