"Dr Burnie was born in Dumfriesshire in 1815. He first came to Bradford in 1836 as assistant to Messrs Cooper and Douglas of Rawson Place, having first taken his degrees of MD Edinbio and LRCS Edinbio(?). After the death of Mr Cooper, Dr Burnie removed to London where he practised with success as a physician and helped the post of honorary senior physician to the Islington Dispensary.

After 15 years residence in London he returned to Bradford and became one of the firm of Messrs Douglas, Kaye and Burnie. A few years later Mr Douglas retired on account of ill health and on the death of Mr Kaye the firm was carried on solely by Dr Burnie until 1879 he took into partnership his son, Mr W Gilehriol(?) Burnie.

Dr Burnie wrote a series of articles in The Spectator on Medical Reform. He acted as honorary medical advisor to the workers of the Bradford Town Mission. He was also a permanent Vice president of the Yorkshire branch of the British Medical Association and had been president. He was three 3 times president of the Bradford Medico-Chirugical Society was a fellow of the medical society, London.

He died in 1891 leaving a widow, and two sons and one daughter."
