Was born at Soyland near Halifax in 1840 and was educated at school conducted by Mr Joe Cocker, and later attended evening classes in Bradford under Mr Thomas Potter.

When about eight years of age, his father who was then a farmer had the misfortune to lose all his capital by disease; the family afterwards came to Bradford and when about 10 years of age Dennis was a half timer at a cotton mill, then carried by Messrs Sutcliffe and Rawson. When Dennis was 12 years old he became a full timer and continued in the business until he was 26 years of age. Then purchased a small plot of property, and from time to time purchased further lots, also when opportunity occurred he himself built various blocks of property.

Mr Bottomley first entered public life in 1882 when he was returned un-opposed to the Town Council for Manningham Ward. He was twice re-elected for the Ward without contests (1885 and 1888) and in 1891 he raised(?) to the Aldermanic bench. In 1893 he was re-elected and assigned to the Allerton Ward.

For 7 years he was chairman of the building committee, then he resigned the position to become Vice Chairman of the Street Improvement Committee. He retired from the council in 1897. Mr Bottomley celebrated his Golden Wedding in 1911. He has been the President of the Second Equitable Building Society for many years and still holds that position.

He is a Liberal in politics.

He was married in 1861 to Miss Sarah Craven, daughter of Mr David Craven of Bradford and has issue two sons and five daughters.
