from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Was born in Bradford in 1848 and educated at Eastbrook School under Mr Crebbin and afterwards at the evening classes at the Mechanics’ Institute under Mr Thomas Potter. Leaving school at 12 1/2 years of age he entered the office of Messrs Terry and Watson, solicitors of Bradford for three years and then went to Messrs William Ferrand and Son to learn the colonial wool business, staying with the firm ten years.

In 1874 he commenced business on his own account.

Outside business his interest has been Sunday School and church work. He has had a long association with Girlington Baptist Church and Rosse Street Shipley, and has occupied the positions of Secretary, Treasurer and also Deacon for over 20 years. He has taken an active part in the Bradford Discharged Prisoners Aid Society for about 30 years.

Mr Newboult is also Chairman of the Governors of the Nutter Orphanage and has been a governor for 19 years. He is a member of the Committee of Rawdon Baptist College. In politics he is a Liberal and has been the chairman of Shipley West Ward Liberal Club. He married Miss Briggs, the elder daughter of the late Mr James Briggs and has issue 2 sons and 3 daughters.
