Note in Sowden's notebook:
'Thoms. Parkinson Muff. For a period of 44 years was head of the firm of Messrs Brown, Muff & Co. and who though never a prominent figure in public life, enjoyed a large degree of popularity amongst all portions of the community. The firm was originally started in 1817 by Mrs Brown, mother of the late Mr Henry Brown who was the seventh mayor of Bradford & filled that office for three years in succession. Mr Henry Brown took Mr Muff his brother-in-law into partnership in 1845 and it was largely due to Mr Muff's ? that the firm developed to such proportions. The present substantial buildings in Market Street were built in 1870. The Corporation requiring the Old Premises for street improvements, an agreement was made for an exchange of land owned by Mr Brown in Market Street, yard for yard, for Corporation property behind it, being the site of the present premises. Mr Muff retired in 1889. He was a director of Shipley Gas Co and a deacon of Old Salem Chapel in Manor Row. He was a Liberal contributor to practically all local charitable institutions, more especially the Bradford Tradesmens Benevolent Institutions (which was founded by Mr. Brown) and the Ilkley Hospital. He was born in 1821. Married i 1844 and died in 1901 in his 81st year. He left 3 sons, Henry, Charles & Frederick.
