Watercolour portrait of George Newby
from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Was born in 1843 and educated at Saint James School, Manchester Road. After spending some time with Mr Ben Johnson, draper, he joined his father in fish(?) and game business and in 1866 took over the business on his own account.
He opened a similar business in Boar Lane, Leeds in 1869 and another in St James' Street, Harrogate in 1876. Business was subsequently made into a limited company.
Mr Newby is a director of the Third Equitable Building Society. He is one of the most prominent retail traders in the city.
Mr Newby married in 1865 and has issue six sons and four daughters.
He died in 1919."
