Watercolour portrait of Samuel Peel Myers, Chairman of Bradford School Board

from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Son of Mr Thomas Myers, worsted manufacturer, was born in 1830 at Great Horton and was educated at a private school. He remained at school until he was 13 years of age and after two years with his father he entered the warehouse of Mr Herbert Samson of Bradford. Here he stayed for 19 years and then joined with Messrs Charles Sowden and Aaron Wade under the style of Messrs SP Myers & Co. In a few years both Mr Sowden and Mr Wade retired. As a young man Mr Myers along with his brothers conducted a night school which proved in those days a valuable institution. This work prepared Mr Myers for more extended social work which has marked his career.

He has been an incessant worker for the public weal.

Mr Myers was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1883 and has been a member of the Licensing Committee during the whole of that time, being elected chairman in 1900 when he was 70 years of age.

In 1910 the City Council bestowed the Freedom of the City upon Mr Myers in his 80th year. On his retirement from the Bench in his 85th year he was presented with an address and a handsome silver dessert and tea service. He was a member of the Bradford School Board from 1879 to 1891 was chairman for many years.

His connection with the Wesleyan Methodist Church dates from his home early boyhood and he has occupied almost every official position including that of local preacher in the church. Mr Myers is a Liberal and temperance reformer. As is well known Mr Myers is at the head of the firm of SP Myers & Co, a worsted manufacturer.

Mr Myers has been twice married, 1st to a daughter of Mr James Pool of Lindley(?) by whom he had issue two sons and two daughters. His second wife was the widow of the late Charles Lawton(?), Wesleyan Minister. He died in 1917 in his 87th year."
