Watercolour portrait of John Charles Oddy (Flower Oddy), aged 60. Born Feb 15th 1830 son of Joseph Oddy a famous flautist.
from John Sowden's notebooks:
'Born February 15th 1830. Son of Joseph Oddy a famous flautist. He was apprenticed to Mr E Mitchell, stuff merchant. Commenced business on his own account in 1860, and became one of the principal merchants in the town. He was a prominent Freemason and an ardent Conservative. He was particularly fond of flowers and gardening, and always wore a boquet (sic) in his buttonhole and was familiarly known amongst his personal friends as Flower Oddy. He was a great raconteur.'
