Watercolour portrait of Edmund Lee, Registrar, County Court Bradford

from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Was born at Stokesley in the North Riding, April 8 1844, and was educated at Masham Grammar School. As a youth he resided for some time in Leeds. His first introduction to law was in the humble position of a corresponding clerk in the office, at Skipton, of Mr George Robinson whose name was subsequently changed to that of Garnett-Orme and who was appointed to the Bradford District Registry of the High Court under the Adjudication Act, 1872.
In due time he took his articles and became a fully fledged solicitor. He proved himself so indispensable to Mr Garnett-Orme that in 1888 he was appointed by Judge Daniel QC as Joint Registrar. Since 1888 Mr Lee has acted in sole charge of the District Registry and of the Bankruptcy Court in Bradford. Mr Lee has been interested in various institutions in Bradford, particularly the Young Men's Christian Association.
Mr Lee published a monograph of Wordsworth's sister. The task was a laborious one, but it was a labour of love and in “Dorothy Wordsworth” he produced a book which will endure. Two editions have been exhausted in England and in America has been well received.
Mr Lee is the author of “Notable Sisters”, “The King With Seven Crowns”. His deep interest in Wordsworth induced him years ago to purchase Dove Cottage, Grasmere, in which the poet and his sister lived. It is now a Cottage Museum and Mr Lee is one of the Trustees. Mr Lee married in 1881 the youngest daughter of the late Mr John White of Bingley and he has two sons and one daughter. He is a Wesleyan and has held various offices in the connection."
