Watercolour portrait of Margaret Holden Illingworth, wife of Alfred Illingworth MP.
From John Sowden's notebooks:
"Mrs Alfred Illingworth was born in 1842 and was the younger daughter of Sir Isaac Holden. She was married in 1866. Mrs Alfred was a splendid worker in the cause of liberalism and helped Mr Alfred Illingworth in every possible way, smoothing many a thorny path with tact. She was an indefatigable worker and was seen and heard on many platforms, helping with her knowledge and with her purse many social, philanthropic and religious works in the city. She is very much interested in hygienic clothing and general health questions particularly fresh air treatment and has visited W. Riekle's (?) sunbath cure at Valdes, Austria many times and to which she ascribes her present (?) health and vigour."
