Sowden's note in notebooks -
'Was educated at Bingley Grammar School. Was apprenticed to the drapery trade and carried on business on his own account at Cleckheaton and afterwards in Bradford. He entered the City Council as a representative of the South Ward in 1876 and was made an Alderman in 1907. He is the Chairman of the Sewage Committee. In politics, a Conservative, he has filled many offices for his party, has been president of the Bradford Conservative Association. He stood as a Conservative candidate for the Spen Valley Division but was unsuccessful. He is married and has several children. Richard Johnson died January 23rd 1931 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Mrs Johnson died January 28th 1931.'
