Sowden's note in notebooks -
'Mr Jeffery was the son of Mr Charles Jeffery and was born at Swaffham, Norfolk in 1832. He was educated at the private school of Mr J Per? Whose son became Bishop of Worcester. Mr Jeffery was ? to the Town Clerk at Lynn in 1849 & having been qualified as a solicitor in 1854, after having five or six years of experience in London with his former master he came to Bradford in 1858 & entered the office of the late Mr John Taylor. In 1860 he joined Mr Taylor in partnership – the firm being ‘Taylor & Jeffery’. In 1861 Mr David Little joined the firm & it became Taylor, Jeffery & Little. When Mr Little died in 1891 Mr? W Jessop became a member of the firm and two sons of Mr Jeffery were taken into partnership under the title Taylor, Jeffery & Jessop. Mr Taylor died in 1898 leaving Mr J.R. Jeffery as the oldest practicing Solicitor in Bradford.
He was in the Bradford volunteers in 1859-60, Captain Lister (afterwards Lord Masham) being command of the small company. Mr Jeffery, a conservative in politics, took an active part on behalf of Alfred Harris in the election of April 1859, when the candidates were Mr Harris, Mr titus Salt (after Sir Titus) and Mr Wockham. Mr Jeffery was for a short time Hon. Secretary of the Bradford Conservative Registration Society and also for 1860-1 for the committee for the formation of the ‘Bradford Club’.
He is Churchman & took an active part in connection with the erection of St Lukes and St Mark’s Churches. He is one of the Trustees (patrons) of the Vicar of St Mark’s and, for some years, was one of the Church wardens of St Pauls.
Mr J R Jeffery has been Clerk to the commissioner? Of taxes for the East Morley Division for many years, his appointment dating from 1874. He is also the secretary of the Board of Examiners under the Coal Miners Regulations Act for the districts of Yorkshire and Lancashire since 1873.
Mr Jeffery is one of the Trustees of Runds alms? He was solicitor for ? other the important firms. ? Moor Company and the Bowling Ironworks Co.'
