Portrait of Ben Johnson.
Sowden's note in notebooks -
'Mr Johnson was born in Bradford in 1827. His father was a well-known doctor in the town. Mr Johnson was apprenticed to a Bradford draper and afterwards had much experience in various parts of the country including London. He commenced business on his own account in Kirkgate and became one of the best-known drapers and one of the most successful in Bradford. He was very popular with his assistants and many stayed a long time with him, one for 32 years and another for 17. He had a very large clientele of good families and was well known for his quiet benevolence. He was married and his wife pre- deceased him and had no family. He died in 1915.'
