Notes from Sowden's notebooks...
Was born in 1825 in the village of Waterhead, between Oldham and Saddleworth, near the Yorkshire border. He was the youngest of those brothers who were all trained for and entered the church. He graduated with B.A degree at Queens college Cambridge in 1849, was ordained deacon in the same year and in the following year was ordained priest by Dr Prince Lee then Bishop of Manchester. He first acted as curate at St Peter's, Salford, for a few months and was then appointed to succeed a brother - the late Canon Bardsley, of St Anne's Manchester, as senior curate of Burnley Parish Church. After two years work in that Parish he accepted the post of the superintendent of the Liverpool Scripture Readers Society and at the same time was lecturer of the Liverpool Parish Church. His first incumbency was that of St Silas's Church Liverpool in 1857. In the following year took the M. A. Degree at Cambridge. Whilst in Liverpool Dr Tait (the Then Bishop of London) gave him the important post of secretary to the London diocese home missions. After nine years of work in the orphans home appointed by Dr Jackson (Dr Taits successor) as rector of Stepney and a rural dean. He held the rectorship of Stepney from 1869 to 1880 and in the latter year he came to Bradford. He was offered the ? of Ballarat? in 1875 but declined it. In 1880 he succeeded Bishop Ryan as Vicar of Bradford upon invitation of the Simeon Trustees. Archdeacon Tait conferred upon him the degree of D. D. in recognition of services in connection with the London Diocesan Home Mission, and the clergy of Stepney presented him with a gold watch and an address in expression of their appreciation Archdeacon Bardsley served about 5 years as a member of the Bradford School Board. He was also chairman of the Bradford branch of the Church of England Temperance Society as well as the Sunday Closing Association. He was chairman of the governors of the Bradford Grammar school. In 1884 Dr Bardsley was made honorary canon of Ripon and in 1894 he was appointed archdeacon of ?. In 1875 he was appointed by the Bishop of Ripon as a canon residence of Ripon. He died in 1896 leaving a widow one son and four daughters. There was no religious or social work in which he did not take interest and he was willing at all times to do his best to further practical work.
