Portrait of Alderman Walter Barber, Lord Mayor of Bradford.
Sowden's note in notebooks -
'Born in Bradford on the 16th March 1864 and educated at St. Andrew's Church Mission School. Employed many years at Messrs George Armitage Ltd. dyers, and also a number of years in the warehouse of Messrs J. Holden & Sons Ltd. Elected a member of the City Council, November 1907 to 1910. Again elected November 1913. Elected Secretary of the Bradford and District Trades and Labour Council January 31st 1907. Elected Deputy Lord Mayor 9th November 1918. Was made Alderman July 1919. Elected Lord mayor 13th July 19th to November 1919. Appointed Justice of the Peace for the City of Bradford March 1915.'
