Sowden's note in notebooks -
'Was born in 1846 and was one of the best known brokers in Bradford. He attended all the important sales in Bradford and the district for over fifty years and he executed commissions for many prominent business gentlemen. He took a fairly prominent part in public affairs, he was an active worker at the Eastbrook Brotherhood. Was a special constable of the old school and a former member of Bradford Northern Football Club Committee. He was a striking personality. He died in 1916.'
