Watercolour portrait of Thomas Renton, age 75 Wool-stapler

from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Was born in 1814 at Apperley Bridge and was educated at a private school at Rawdon. He was apprenticed to the wool trade with Mr Thomas Levens White of Apperley Bridge and afterwards was with the firm of Mrs John Rouse & Sons, worsted spinners, Bradford. He commenced business as a wool merchant in Bradford in 1842. He never took a prominent part in the affairs of the town but held the office of overseer for Bradford for some years and was also a trustee and manager for several years of the Bradford Savings Bank in Manor Row. Was also a church warden for many years of Saint Jude's church as well as at the new Christ Church afterwards built in Manningham Lane.

He was a staunch supporter of the Church of England, and was a Tory of the old school and always took a keen interest in the politics of the day. He was a well known member of the Bradford Exchange and was considered one of the best judges of wool in the district. Mr Renton married Elizabeth, widow of Dr Limbert of Wakefield, in 1843 and had issue four sons and three daughters. He died in 1892."
