Biographical note in Sowden's notebook:
"Was born at Gateforth near Selby in 1808 (elsewhere recorded 1818) and belonged to a family whose occupation for several centuries had been farming. He came to Bradford when he was four years old, to live with an uncle who was in business as a chemist, but afterwards went to Gateforth, where he was educated. He was afterwards apprenticed to Mr Fell a Huddersfield chemist and also served some time as an assistant to Mr. P. Squire, of Oxford Street London (at that time chemist to the Queen). He began business in Bradford about 1830 at the bottom of Ivegate and afterwards removed to Bridge Street. Mr. Rimmington held the offices of borough analyst for Bradford and Dewsbury, from the passing of the Food & Drugs Act over a quarter of a century ago. He died [in 1897 - almost erased in pencil] leaving a son and two daughters."
