Watercolour portrait of John Rayner, age 71

from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Was born at Eccleshill in 1826. His father was a cloth manufacturer at Eccleshill and, not liking his father’s occupation, Mr Rayner became clerk to Mr Thomas Hague of the East Morley and Bradford Savings Bank in 1855 and afterwards became Actuary. Upon the manager’s death he was appointed Secretary of the Savings Bank and Manager of the Investment department. Mr Rayner held this position until the Investment Department was taken over in 1890 by the Northern Counties Investment Trust Ltd when he became the manager. Mr Rayner was a member of the Wesleyan Church for 51 years and held nearly all the offices open to Layman. He was a Liberal but took no actual part in politics. He died in 1900. He was twice married and left a widow, one son and one daughter."
