Sowden's note in notebooks -
'Mrs Armitage was born near Huddersfield, her father, Mr R Berry, a farmer. Here she lived until her marriage at the age of eighteen to Mr Geo. armitage of Huddersfield. Very early in life she showed a taste for music and was trained by the late Mr Joe Wood, of Huddersfield and afterwards by Mr Joshua Marshall. Madame Armitage joined the Huddersfield Choral Society in 1870 and was also a member of the Huddersfield Madrigal Society. On coming to Bradford she joined the Festival Choral Society. Her voice was a full rich contralto, which she employed with great success. Her vocal ability was supplemented by a graceful and commanding presence. In 1885 she went to the United States and met with a very cordial reception. Madame Armitage's services are freely given in aid of many objects of a benevolent character. Madame Armitage was the mother of three sons, who survive her. She died in 1893, in her forty-first year.'
