Watercolour portrait of Sergeant Major Aldridge, painted by John Sowden. Sergeant Aldridge died in 1896.
from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Was the Chief Drill Instructor to the Bradford Rifles. He was born in 1819 and when 20 years old joined the 46th Reg of Infantry. He was in active service for 21 years. He went thro the Crimean War having fought at Alma, Inkerman and Balacluva and had the clasps after all there events with his Crimean medal.
He also had a Turkish medal and the long service & good conduct medal. In 1861 he was appointed Sergeant Major of the Bradford Rifles. He was an excellent shot and attended the most important rifle shooting meetings for many years and often beat all corners in competition. He was held in high esteem by both officers and men. He died in 1896.
