Sowden's note in notebooks -
'Mr Atkinson a native of Bradford, was always a restless lad, hence it was that after completing his education, to the dismay of his parents he went to sea & for a period of ? ten years sailed the mighty ?, ? and anon settling for a time in some distant land only to return to the sea which was more suited to his state. After one of his voyages in a merchant? He landed in Australia at the time of the gold fever was at its height and like others he became ? with it, so much so, that he gave up the sea which he loved and assumed the role of a miner. After enduring great hardship with little prospect of his ambitions being realised, he left the goldfield for ?, returned to Bradford & as it was originally intended he should do so, he entered the solicitors office of the late Mr ? ? Hill. This was the ending of his wanderings. Mr Atkinson was admitted a solicitor in 1871 at an age when most solicitors have been in practice for years. After 30 years practice in the Courts he was appointed Official Receiver for Bradford, continuing his private practice also, on the death of Mr Joseph Arthur Binns. He acted an Tory agent for the Eastern Division candidates. After returning from the Office of Official Receiver, Mr Atkinson continued in practice as a solicitor up to within a short time of his death in 1916. He was a very familiar figure in the County ? and a very popular member of his profession. He married Miss Annie Schuberth an actress who made a position in ‘comic’ opera & was specially distinguished for her singing.'
