Sowden's note in notebooks -
'Mr John Ambler was the eldest son of Mr Jeremiah Ambler and was the first to become a member of the firm. and was subsequently joined by Mr Edward and Mr George And Mr Sam Ambler, younger brothers who were all survived by Mr John Ambler.
The concern Jeremiah Ambler and Sons Ltd was converted into a limited company in 1893 & Mr Ambler became chairman, a position maintained until the time of his death.
He entered the Town Council in 1865 and sat as a Conservative for the North Ward for ten years, retiring in 1877 after two years on the Aldermanic (?) bench. In 1870 he became a member of the Bradford Chamber of Commerce and was a Vice President of that body. Sice 1883 he had been a director of the Bradford Exchange Co. and at one time Chairman, and among other offices held by him were those of a director of the St George’s Hall Co. and the National Boiler and Central Insurance Co. and a member of the Worsted Committee. In 1887 he was placed on the Commission of the Peace for the city. After relinquishing a good deal of his public work Mr Ambler devoted himself to travel and spent much of his time abroad.
A staunch Conservative, Mr Ambler was an active member of the party. He was a devoted Churchman and gave liberally to St Luke’s Church and other Churches.
Mr Ambler’s most notable work was in the establishment at Hest Bank, Morecambe of the Ambler Holiday Home which is now carried on by the Cinderella Club.
Mr Ambler was twice married. His first wife was a Miss Yates of Cleckheaton and she died in 1882 without issue. In 1887 he married a daughter of Mr Robert Gates of Sussex (?) who died in 1900 leaving four sons and two daughters.
He left estate, value £387,545-3s-2d.'
