Portrait of Sarah Laycock (Cockle Sarah) by John Sowden, 1889.

Recent research undertaken by Bradford Museums and Galleries suggests that previously published information about Sarah is incorrect. A baptism record states that Sarah Ann Hartley (father Henry and mother Mary Hartley) was born on 20 May 1836, not 1834 as previously published. Sarah was baptised on 21 October 1857 aged 21 years old. A census record for 1841 shows a 7 year old Sarah living with her parents and siblings at George Street, Bradford. A census record for 1851 shows Sarah aged 16 and she is listed as 'Pauper. Imbecile'. A census record for 1861 shows Sarah Hartley living with her widowed mother and siblings at Friederick Street, Bradford. It states she is 'At home (subject to fits'). A marriage record showed a Sarah Hartley marrying a Joshua Laycock at St Peter's Church (Bradford cathedral) on 19 August 1860. Joshua is listed as a 'carter'. This differs from previously published information which says she married John Laycock in 1873. Sarah and Joshua appear in a 1871 census record. Joshua is a 34 year old hawker and Sarah is a 31 year old hawker. Both are listed as an 'imbecile'. A 1891 census record lists a widowed Sarah Laycock, aged 56, living on her own in Bradford Moor. Sarah Laycock married William Gath (not Garth has previously published) on 5 June 1893. William is listed on the marriage record as a 52 widower and brickyard labourer and Sarah is 59 years old and a cockle vendor. A census record for 1901 lists them both living at 26 Carpenter Street, Bowling. William is a 60 year old coal hawker and Sarah is 66 years old. Sarah died in 1909 when she fell down the cellar steps at the house she was living at on Birkshall Lane. She broke her neck and died later that day.
