Watercolour painting by John Sowden of Reverend Richard Howarth
from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Was born at Brearley near Luddendenfoot, in 1852 and was educated at Accrington. He was one of the first pupils in the Barnes Street Sunday saw Accrington.
He retained his association with that institution till the year 1874 when he entered the Baptist College, Manchester, being one of the five initial students. He received his "call" to Heaton in 1877, and after doing duty there monthly he took up the pastorate permanently. He is one of the three oldest ministers in regard to length of service in Bradford.
The old chapel at Heaton was abandoned and in 1896 the congregation entered the new chapel which had been erected at a cost of £6000. Mr Howarth acted as an assistant secretary of the Yorkshire Association for seven years and had previously served as secretary of the Bradford and Craven district. He has also been a president of the Yorkshire Association. He is the secretary of the Building and Extension Committee at the present time and sits on the committee of the Brighton Grove College and as a representative of Yorkshire he is a member of the Baptist Missionary Committee in London. He is one of the executive of the Bradford Free Church Council. He is a director of the East Molly savings bank. Mr Howarth married Miss Harriet Elizabeth Watson, daughter of Mr Jonas Watson of Idle. He retired in 1919. By the marriage there is a son and two daughters."
