Portrait of Monsieur John Claverie, age 78, by trade a bookbinder but for over 30 years subsisted by begging.

Research - known as 'Monsieur' as a Frenchman. Aged 78. Formerly worked in a bookmakers. Sold pens and pencils, and begged for money on the pretense of returning to France. Lived and died in common lodging. Painted in August 1888.
