from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Was born in Bradford in 1848. He served his apprenticeship with the firm of Gay & Swallow, architects & engineers of Bradford under whom he was employed on several works of importance, including large cemeteries at Manchester & Belfast, the Eccleshill & Bolton gas works & the extension of the Gas Works of Shipley.
In 1869 Mr Cox was engaged under Mr P.C. Lockwood. In I.C.E Borough Engineer of Brighton, on the survey & drainage of the town.
Early in 1870 he left Brighton to become an assistant to me Char Goll in I.C.E. the Borough Surveyor & Waterworks Engineer of Bradford. In the following year he was appointed Deputy Borough Surveyor. In 1874 on the resignation of Mr Goll, Mr J(?) Allison(?) of (?) succeeded to the position, but resigned in early 1879 to become City Surveyor of Manchester and Mr Cox was appointed his successor at Bradford. A position which he retained until 1908 - a period of 19 years, when he resigned & was appointed Consulting City Engineer for a period of 3 years.
He was elected associate member of the Institute of civil Engineers in 1888 & made member in 1889. He is also a member of the County and Municipal Engineers Association which awarded him the first premium in 1893 for his (?) entitled 'Street Tramways and Electric Tramways'.
Mr Cox took an active interest in the Bradford Lawn Tennis Club. Lately he has paid more attention to golf. He is a director of the Mechanics Institute."
