from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Was born in Northampton in 1856. Educated first at an elementary school in Northampton, then at the Northampton Grammar School, Bradford Grammar School and Trinity College Cambridge. Took his B.A. degree in the Mathematical Tripos 1878. Appointed assistant master of Bradford Grammar School in the same year. Took his M.A. degree in 1881. Elected member of the Bradford School Board in 1886 and member continuously till 1904, being Chairman for the last seven years. A member of the executive committee of the National Association & Northern Counties League of Education. Qualified as an accountant in 1890; became fellow in 1902; later appointed on the executive committee of the Incorporated Society of Accountants.
He was the Liberal candidate for Parliament for West Bradford in January 1906 and elected Justice of the Peace in the same year. In 1881 he married Celia Margaret Simpson, daughter of Rev Sam Simpson a former superintendent of Eastbrook Chapel."
