from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Mr Clapham was born of Burley Hill, Wharfedale in 1835. His farther was Mr John Peele Clapham of Leeds, a West Riding Magistrate. Mr Clapham was educated at the Moravian School at Fulneck and afterwards at Clapham Park, London. He was apprenticed to Messrs Craisan & Harrop manufacturers & subsequently commenced business in Bradford as manufacturers in partnership with the late Mr Henry Priestley. In 1873 Mr Clapham commenced the insurance business & was (?) with it for the rest of his life. For 19 years he was on the Council for the Bradford Mechanics Institute & worked hard promoting education, temperance and political objects. For a good many years he acted as (?) secretary of the Bradford Historical & Antiquarian Society. He was a Congregationalist and liberal in politics.

He was a Governor of the Yorkshire United Independence College & a Vice-President of the Bradford Auxiliary Bible Society & for many years the local secretary of the Workhousemen, Clerk's & Drapers School. Mr Clapham was twice married."
