Sowden's note in notebooks - 'Vicar of Bradford, afterwards Bishop of Peterborough, was born in 1873 and was educated at Marlborough & Trinity College, Cambridge, and Ridley Hall under Bishop Moule. He graduated at Trinity College in 1895 and was in the third class of the Theological Tripos, and in 1899 took the M.A. degree. His first curacy was at St. John's, Eastbourne, to which he was licensed after being ordained by the Bishop of Chichester in 1897. Three years later he was transferred to Huddersfield, where for a year he served under Canon Bardsley. In 1901 he was preferred to the living of St. Jude's, East Buxton, and laboured there until 1903, when he was appointed Rector of St Paul's, Kersal, Manchester.In 1908 he was presented to the Vicarate of Bishop Auckland in the Diocese of Durham, a parish with a population of over 12,000, and at the same time became Rural Dean of Auckland. He accepted the Vicarate of Bradford in November 1912. He married in 1898 a daughter of Mr Henry Thornton of Nottingham. He was consecrated Bishop of Peterborough by the Archbishop of Canterbury in Westminster Abbey September 21st 1916.'
