Watercolour portrait by John Sowden of Joseph Hill, JP. Born at Huddersfield, May 1827. Came to Bradford March 1833. Went to Bradford Commercial Joint Stock Banking Co in January 1841 and retired from the bank January 1891 having been Manager twenty six and a half years.

from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Mr Hill was born at Huddersfield in 1827. He came to Bradford in 1833 and was educated by Mr Isaac Sugden of Hall Ings and the Reverend AW Thompson, Horton Road. In 1841 at the age of 14, he entered the Bradford Joint Stock Banking Company of which his father was manager, as a junior clerk, and after his father’s retirement in 1850 he was appointed head cashier, Mr John Gibson succeeding to the managership. In 1864 Mr Gibson retired and Mr Hill succeeded to the post, a position which he held until 1891, retiring after 50 years service, including 26 1/2 years as manager.

For six years Mr Hill was an overseer of the poor and a member of the first committee of the Bradford Fever Hospital and he was a trustee of the East Morley and Bradford Savings Bank, retiring in 1909 when he was chairman. He was a justice of the peace, a director of the Bradford Cemetery Co and of the St George's Hall Co. In politics he was a Conservative and a churchman. He died in 1910, leaving five sons."
