Watercolour portrait by John Sowden of Alderman J. Hayhurst, Secretary Amalgamated Society of Dyers.

From John Sowden's notes:

'Was born at Lancaster in 1864 at the age of four, his mother, a widow, removed to Bradford, occupying a cellar dwelling. He received some education at the Ragged School and Saint Michael’s Church School. At ten he was sent to the mill as a spinner for John Priestman and Co as a half timer where for eight years he remained. When 18 he entered the Woolcombing firm of Isaac Holden & Sons and later the firm of Holden, Burnley & Co.

Afterwards he entered the dyeing departments of Lister and Co, Manningham Mills and remained there until 1893 as an operative Dyas. Mr Hirst was elected General Secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Dyers in 1893. Alderman Hayhurst entered the City Council in 1893 in the Labour interest for the Allerton Ward. He was raised to the Aldermanic bench in 1904 and on the completion of his six years term he was returned for Little Horton Ward. He has rendered good service in the Sheet Cleaning and Team Labour Committee and for two years was Vice Chairman and afterward Chairman, holding the office with Credit for some six years. Perhaps the most important of Alderman Hayhurst's work was his successful opposition to the expenditure of £100,000 for destructors, in regard to which subsequent events have confirmed the attitude he adopted.
He was appointed to the Commission of the Peace for Bradford in 1906.

He married Miss Mather, daughter of Mr B Mather of Bradford and he has one son. Was Lord Mayor from November 1918 until he died in June 1919."
