Watercolour portrait of Ezra Waugh Hammond, Councillor
from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Was born in 1836 at Four Lane Ends and was educated at Por(?) Academy, Spofforth. His father Mr James Hammond kept the Craven Heifer Inn at Four Lane Ends, but subsequently removed to the Market Tavern in the Old Green market. Mr Ezra Hammond was apprenticed to Messrs W Rouse & Co, manufacturers and served the usual term. He went to Messrs J & E Rhodes, wool merchants and to Messrs W Fison & Co, spinners to become acquainted with the whole of the manufacturing branches of the trade. He however never entered the textile trade on his own account as his father purchased “Pullans” (Fountain Brewery, Manchester Road).
The business of Fountain Brewery grew to large proportions and Mr Ezra Hammond found employment for many years in developing the concern until 1889 when he disposed of his interest in the brewery to a London syndicate for about £220,000 and relinquished all share in the responsibility.
Mr Hammond had for some years carried on the business of a stuff finisher in Manchester Road. In 1890 he was elected to the Mayoralty and in the following year was made an Alderman.
He was for some years President of the Bradford Conservative Association. He died in 1894 leaving one son and six daughters.
Mr Hammond was for some years chairman of the Association of Yorkshire Brewers and also of the Bradford Business Association. He was returned as a member of the Town Council without opposition in 1881 and was four times returned to Little Horton Ward without opposition. He was a Freemason. He worshipped at Salem Congregational Church."
