Portrait of Benjamin Hammond, Age 81, Retired Cattle Dealer and Publican.
Sowden's note in notebooks -
'Mr Hammond was a well-known Bradfordian. He carried on the trade of a cattle dealer, first at berwick-on-Tweed with a partner and afterwards at Bradford and other places on his own account, residing mainly in Bradford. He was married, but had no children and outlived his wife. His business was very successful and in 1873 he commenced a novel means of giving his relations the financial benefit which in most cases comes after death. Assembling his numerous kinsfolk on his birthday he distributed large sums of money amongst them amounting to over 50,000. Mrs Hammond who was also possessed of means adopted a similar course with regard to her relatives. Mr Hammond was a Conservative of the old type and a churchman and was a generous giver to the funds of St. Mark's Church, Manningham. He died in 1890 at the age of 83.'
