Watercolour portrait of James Hart, Age 51.

from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Mr James Hart, a secondhand bookseller of Northgate, Bradford, was well known amongst book-lovers over a wide area. He had been in business in Bradford for over 30 years, commencing in a wooden building on the site of Messrs George Thorpe and Co’s premises. After that he had a large storeroom on Sackville Street, but recently he had taken a shop in Northgate. His knowledge of Yorkshire topographical works was said to be unique, and he regularly had commissions from book lovers and professional gentleman to purchase desired volumes. His aid had also occasionally been called in by the Bradford Free Library Committee. He died in 1895 aged 55 years."
