Portrait of Antoine Hiff, Manager of the Victoria G N Hotel.
Sowden's note in notebooks -
'Was born at a hamlet called Kleingaft near Strasbourg (Alsace). After spending some time in the Riviera Mr Hiff came to London in 1878. His first employment was at the Langham Hotel. After gaining further experience at the principal London hotels including Carlton and Claridges Mr Hiff came to Leeds as assistant manager at the Queens Hotel M. Ry. in 1902. He came to Bradford as manager at the Great Northern Victoria Hotel. In the year of the Bradford Exhibition, Lord Masham's banquet was entrusted to Mr Hiff by the late David Wade, the Mayor of Bfd, and proved a great success. Since then Mr Hiff continued with his usual energies to cater for his patrons until the hotel was commandeered for the Wool Control in January 1917.'
