Portrait of John Joseph Hawcridge, born September 28th 1864, came to Bradford 1874. Member of Bradford Football Club, York County Football Club and English International.
Biographical note in Sowden's notebook:
Joseph. J. Hawcridge was a brilliant footballer & will be long remembered. he commenced playing with the Manningham Albion Football Club in 1875 as a forward & remained with the club (afterwards called Manningham until 1884-5, when he joined the Park Avenue Club. His fame as a wing three-quarter quickly grew & in his first season with Bradford her scored 38 tries. For several years he played for Yorkshire, the North, & England, and was always popular wherever he went. He was captain of the Bradford teams in 1891-2. He married a sister of Edgar Wilkinson, one of Bradford's famous International Forwards. In 1904 he went to ??????? & passed his qualifications as a solicitor, distracted there. he died in 1905.
