Watercolour portrait of Philip Chasemoor Gates QC. Born at Steyning Sussex August 1824. Entered Caius College Cambridge Oct 1843. Took degree and entered at the Inner Temple Jan 1847, called to the bar 1850. Made QC 1874 and shortly afterwards elected of the Inner Temple. Appointed Recorder of Brighton 1879 and appointed Judge of County Court at Bradford 1885.

from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Was the second son of the late George Gates of Steyning and was born in 1824. He was educated at Caius College, Cambridge, and graduated B.A. in 1847. For a time he practised as a special pleader and in 1850 he was called to the Bar.

He became Queen's Council in 1874 and was subsequently a Bencher of his Inn. In June 1879 Mr Gates was appointed Recorder of Brighton and was engaged on the South eastern Circuit. In 1885 he was appointed Judge of No. 11 County Court Circuit which includes Bradford, Burnley, Colne, Keighley, Otley and Skipton. He also acted as Bankruptcy and Equity Judge at Leeds. He retired in 1896 and went to reside in London where he died in 1911. Mr Gates married in 1862 a daughter of Mr Peter T. Herbon, of Wandsworth."
