From John Sowden's notebook:

"The Reverend Knight Gale was born in 1820 at Orsett in Essex and was educated at Duncombe's Academy Orsett. He graduated at Kings College, London and was ordained at Christ’s Church, Newark, where he was curate for 3 1/2 years. Mr Gale was appointed to the newly assigned district of St Andrews, Listerhills in 1853 and remained incumbent till his death in 1891. During Mr Gale’s incumbency the Church, School, Vicarage, Church Room and Mission Church in Longside Lane was completed, principally as a result of his own indefatigable efforts."
